Vocal fry The new craze in talking inspired by Britney Spears

I cant actually figure out what this means. Maybe Ive just never heard someone speak this way. Cant watch the msnbc clip, it must be Flash & Im on an iPad... grrrr.

- Nikki, Boise, Idaho, 15/12/2011 10:10

Wow! Ive noticed the sound of course, but I never gave it much thought. Its kind of like baby talk. Im 27 and abhor this kind of speach. Ive been told I seem older since I was a teenager because Ive never used this method of speech. And it almost makes my ears bleed! I think its an attempt to sound more child like, with less mature vocal chords. I started studying opera a few years ago and have since become very careful with my voice, speaking a little higher to take the pressure off my chords. As long as the child-like look is y, this method will continue. Especially if the girl wants to be seen as y first and foremost. Ive always preferred elegant.

- jim, Texas USA, 13/12/2011 23:16 Absolutely right. This has been going on now for at least 20 years so these professors are a little behind the ball. I find the this accent to be like nails on a chalkboard. It has this lazy quality to it like speaking is actually an effort. They also do that highly annoying thing of ending every sentence like its a question. They also have replaced theE in words to sound like an A. For example, is now pronounced like sax or lets sounds like lats etc.

- Mountain Man, Upstate New York, 14/12/2011 16:08

Its a transient vocalization affectation in some young people. When it persists past the mid-twenties, it becomes embedded, akin to grey-ponytailed men using surf-speak, and is equally out of place. These linguistic styles can negatively affect employers opinions of potential growth within an organisation.

- Hazura Jane, Ross, California US, 14/12/2011 15:43

I wouldnt call it a disorder. I would just call it an annoying tone of voice.

- DanielaCG, Malibu, 14/12/2011 09:12

I agree with Toni, Expat; and with Jim, Texas -- here in California, this growly way of talking has been common among young women for at least two decades (since about the early 90s). You can hear it on radio ads aimed at the younger set -- from about college-aged to early thirties. I always thought it was a California thing.

- Lorena B, California, USA, 14/12/2011 05:40

I thought this kind of girl-speak was meant to imitate the blackened vocal chords of cigarette smokers, which is supposedly a y way to sound....... (NOT.)

- railroad, Austin, TX USA, 14/12/2011 02:27

I disagree. Having friends well into their 40s who also talk like this (as well as a teenage daughter) it is a national affectation here; Britney and whats her ce are just following along.

- Toni, Expat, USA, 13/12/2011 23:24

I think you have it reversed. I think these performers are imitating the way that teenage girls have speaking for years now. I live in a major city in Texas and I had girlfriends in highschool that I can remember speaking like that as r back as 1998.

With SEC slate underway, the training wheels are off for UK Hoops

Kentuckys Southeastern Conference opener was not for the int of heart.

Baskets were at a premium as the Wildcats prevailed 59-56 in a physical and low-scoring afir against Florida. Each and every loose ball was contested as the two teams grabbed a nearly equal share of the 86 rebounds that careened off the rims in Gainesville, Fla.

Given that UK had lost two of three coming into the game and Matthew Mitchell attributed both losses to subpar levels of intensity, seeing his team respond with abundant energy in spite of a relative lack of offensive efficiency, was a welcome development.

We were incredibly energetic; we just didnt play well offensively, Mitchell said. We played a very good defensive game. ... For us to play well on defense we have to have energy.

Having been through the rigors of the SEC schedule, Mitchell knows there will be games when the offense simply isnt able to execute as the Wildcats want it to. With the size, athleticism and defensive ability of so many teams throughout the conference, UK is in for a good number of battles over the coming months.

Gone are the days when the Wildcats are able to experiment with different personnel and sets while they overwhelm opponents with their talent and style of play. Instead, Mitchells players better show up ready to play from the tip if they want to stay on the floor.

Were out of the segment of the season where youre on-the-job training, Mitchell said. Youre either ready to roll when the ball goes in the air or there arent going to be a lot of auditions in SEC play.

Thats certainly going to be the case when UK Hoops (12-2, 1-0 SEC) plays host to ABritneyrkansas (11-2, 0-1 SEC) at 6 p.m. ET in Memorial Coliseum, in a game that will be televised on Fox Sports South.

They just have some very talented players, theyre well-coached and this is always one of the toughest games to prepare for all season, Mitchell said. Itll be a big challenge for our team.

First and foremost, defense is where head coach Tom Collens Razorbacks excel. Opponents are scoring just 50.3 points per game against Arkansas and no team has scored more than 68 points against them all season.

UKs offense has scored just 58.5 points in its last two outings and will be sternly tested in its SEC home opener. Those offensive struggles have coincided with somewhat of a slump from top scorer Adia Mathies. The junior guard has reached double figures just once in UKs last three games largely due to a more passive approach. Mathies has attempted double-digit field goals just twice over her last seven games after trying 10 or more in each of her first six outings of 2011-12.

I just think that for whatever reason, she loses sight of how important she is or how important it is that she is aggressive on offense, Mitchell said. I think it was the Notre Dame game, and she just wasnt aggressive, and she had 17 points. We really need her to have the mentality that maybe a bad shot from Adia is a better shot than a good shot from somebody else.

A quiet presence, Mathies is deferential to her teammates and, at times, unselfish to a ult, but Mitchell hesitated in speaking philosophically about her nature as a player. He sees her current bout with passiveness as nothing more than a fleeting phase. His approach to correcting it hasnt been to try to fundamentally change the way Mathies thinks. Instead, he gives her specific direction that she needs to shoot at least 15 or 16 times per game for UK to have the best chance to succeed.

I tell her she has to shoot the ball this number of times, and if she doesnt we are going to have some problems, Mitchell said. She has a lot of responsibility on offense and she needs to take that seriously every day in practice. We have been talking about it, but we are not going to be nearly as good offensively if she is not very aggressive.

Particularly against a defensively sound Arkansas team, UK will need assertiveness out of a player as dynamic as Mathies to succeed. Mitchell called cing off against the Razorbacks a chore, but hes happy its one his team will be undertaking in the comforts of Memorial Coliseum. The Wildcats have yet to lose at home this season and boast the nations 12th-longest home winning streak of 12 games. UK hasnt played a game at home since a win over Samford on Dec. 21, and will be relying on a loud Memorial crowd as the Cats seek their first 2-0 start in SEC play since 2007-08.

Weve been working hard and I feel like were some progress and itll be a great, great opportunity for us to get back home in front of our crowd (Thursday) night - and I hope we have a big one, Mitchell said. Its an extremely important game. Well be looking forward to taking the court and playing Arkansas.

Britney Spears Interview - Britney Spears on New Album Femme Fatale

Kate Middletons 30 Prettiest Looks in Honor of Her 30th BirthdaySee the Duchess 30 prettiest looks as she celebrates her 30th birthday.

Shes not yet 30, but the pop icon has lived a life and a half in public. Now, with a new hit album and world tour, the beat goes on. Read the interview below and then seeexclusive images from the photo shootas well as the2006 cover story and images.

Britney Spears is on the phone from rehearsals in Los Angeles, where she is busy singing, dancing, and Its Britney, -ing in preparation for her summer tour. She sounds energized and positive, occasionally flashing a wry sense of humor that those who see her only on TV and in the tabloids never glimpse.

Professionally, Britney has a lot to feel good about: Her new albuBritneym,Femme Fatale,is receiving the best reviews of her almost-20-year career. Ive worked so hard on this album, so its really refreshing, she says. I feel like Im drinking a tall glass of homemade sweet tea on a really hot, beautiful day.

LAURA BROWN:What has been your best shion look?

BRITNEY SPEARS:I went to the Grammys in 2002, and I had really curly, curly hair. I had a red dress on. It wasnt short and saucy; it was a long red dress. That dress wasfun.

LB:What was your biggest shion mistake?

BS:Ten years ago at theBillboardawards, I wore this orange hat and orange bra and orange booty pants and purple fishnets. Oh, and I had an orange jacket on.

LB:Was it Halloween?

BS[laughs]: No, it wasnt Halloween. I actually thought I looked hot at the time. But, um, I definitely stood out. I thought it was just a marvelous idea to wear this purple and orange outfit; it was like high school colors. I was a cheerleader for a school I didnt know. People were talking about it, but not in a good way.

LB:Your hair is looking long and lustrous. Are you whipping it back and forth?

BS:Yeah, I love ponytails. Im a wash-and-go girl. But, oh yeah, I like to whip it.

LB:Are you enjoying dancing again?

BS:I love to dance, so its very exciting. The tour rehearsals have been going really well. I think it will be my best show yet.

LB:Will you pull out any giant snakes?

BS:Ha, well see about that. Hopefully, I wont be in the wilderness onstage.

LB:What songs get you moving?

BS:I love S&M and Only Girl by Rihanna; thats why I jumped on the S&M remix. Shes really cool. I like her a lot.

LB:Everybody has Bieber fever. Have you met Justin? Would you ever want to work with him?

BS:I think hes adorable. I just saw his movie, and I really didnt realize how big he was. Hes enormous; hes just Mr. Man. A lot of the movie is really similar to what I did when I was starting out. I did a promo tour for a year, going into radio stations and all that. It was so cool to see our similarities.

LB:Its Britney, is classic, but you say youre less y than impatient. What makes you impatient?

BS:When things take a long time, I just get really stubborn. When I know that things are supposed to go a certain way [laughs] and when its my time of the month.

LB:What makes you laugh uncontrollably?

BS:Usually when people trip or ll or run into something. Not to be mean, but I cant help it. If they really hurt themselves, then I feel bad, but if they accidentally do it and they stand up and act cool like nobody saw them, I have to laugh.

LB:Its been eight years since you kissed Madonna onstage at the MTV awards. What have you learned from her?

BS:I actually saw her a couple of weeks ago at a party. I guess shes really taught me to stay true to myself. That seems like a thing to say, but she taught me through action, not just by saying it. There are so many people around you that have opinions, but you just have to listen to your instincts.

LB:Youve said Jennifer Lopez inspires you professionally. Would you ever want to be a judge onAmerican Idol?

BS:I would! That would be awesome. I wouldnt be a tough judge, though.

LB:What do you think of Lady Gaga?

BS:Shes unique and extremely talented. I love her spin on everything.
